Office for Disability Issues achievements
The Office for Disability Issues is helping government make a difference to the lives of disabled people
The Office for Disability Issues (ODI) is working towards disability equality through:
- leading the government’s work on disability equality
- building capability across government in understanding disabled people and legal obligations
- developing innovative solutions and demonstrating how they can be implemented.
Leading
- ODI works collaboratively with government departments to make sure the needs of disabled people are reflected in their work
- Equality 2025 offers strategic advice at very early stages of policy development on issues that affect disabled people
- ODI coordinates the implementation across government of the UN Convention on the Rights of Disabled People. It does this through working closely with government departments to share good practice and help involve disabled people.
Building capability
- ODI has developed a range of publications and resources for policy and communications professionals
- The ODI Inclusive Communications roadshow helps government communicators create inclusive communications, represent disabled people positively and involve disabled people from the start
- ODI offers support and guidance on addressing the legal obligations of disability equality for all public service delivery.
Developing innovative solutions
- The Right to Control is a major step towards disability equality. ODI is developing and supporting the trailblazers in giving disabled people more choice and control over the care packages they receive.
Reporting on our success
- ODI reports through regular updates to the Roadmap and by coordinating and monitoring the Disability Equality Indicators.
- ODI has been nominated for good practice in several diversity and equality awards.
